Closer look

For a while now Silverstone has been making high quality power supplies and this new model is no different. The Strider Gold Evolution offers all the necessary protections and safeguards to make ownership worry-free. Current, Power, Voltage and temperature overloads are just a handful of protection we find in the PSU. This can only be done by building the unit using the highest quality Japanese caps, chokes, drivers and ICSs.

The 850W model we are looking at today which again is the 850W has 70A on the lone 12v rail with a 40°C operating temp. This should be plenty to run any of the current high video in a GPU setup as well as many of the mid-range cards in a dual to triple GPU configuration.

The Strider is layers in black rugged coating that will repel most finger prints and is scratch resistant. The coating is pretty neutral making ideal to be used in any case for those that are into color coordinating everything inside the PC. If you are concerned about it fitting inside your case it only measure 7” in depth.

Many of you may remember the original Strider Gold power supply from Silverstone. One of the differences between that model and this one is in the fan which cools this little beast. This new model uses the Silverstone Air Penetrator 139mm cooling fan. The original was quiet but this one is even quieter maxing out at 28dBA on load. The fan is has a fluid bearing motor that is PWM controlled base on load and temp.

As you can see from the image below the Strider is 100% modular. Most of the time some manufacturers will leave the main connections permanently attached to the unit which I think is a good idea as they need to be used regardless. One advantage to this route that Silverstone has used is it is ideal for those that want to use the single sleeved extensions that are very popular today.

This isn’t the first time I have seen this from Silverstone and I meant to ask them why but there isn’t any power switch on the back end of the unit. Not a problem for a large percentage of people building a PC but a must for the open air setups many of the benchers use.

Depending on your case and your setup, Silverstone has included the FF141 fan filter with the Strider. It can be used in situations where there is no sort of filter at all or if the PSU is place such a way the fan is not placing the vent supplied for it.

The extensions of the Strider are sleeved in the typical black webbing that is so common. A nice change here would be offering individual sleeved extension for the power supply. But a feature that is added to the unit is a 2200uF cap attached to each PCIe cable to eliminate the whine found in video cards when gaming.
