Introduction to the Cooler Master GX 450W Power Supply
As long as I have been doing power supplies reviews, I have always received the mid and top tier units that are more ideally suited to build your typical gaming rigs with. There are more than just gaming and workstations systems out there today, though. Simple workstations (word processing/internet), Home Theater PC and budget-gaming machines are fast becoming the rage. The HTPC especially as these now seem to be everywhere. Which, because the power requirements are not as large in these type of systems, due to the fact that lower end or integrated graphic cards with only a few hard drives are being installed, there is no reason for an 800-plus watt behemoth to power the system.
Cooler Master realizes this and has just released a new unit under their GX line to fill that roll. This model is only capable of supplying 450 watts, which should easily be enough for the aforementioned system types. CM is marketing the unit for the causal user and budget gamer. Boasting a single 12V rail, the GX 450 should be just enough for the build to scratch that HTPC itch. In order to make sure it can easily handle anything those sort of systems can throw at it, we will be testing it today on a little bit more powerful gaming test bench. How will it fare? We shall see!
