nVidia GeForce GTX 280

The G200 is a very appealing piece of hardware, both in terms of performance and, also with respect to noise. Where, in the case of any of the RADEON offerings, the user is never left in the dark whether the system powers up, courtesy of the fans spinning up, the cooling solution on the GTX 280 is barely audible at startup. Under load, though, it tends to compensate by being slightly louder than the RADEONs. Inside a closed case, it hardly matters either way, though.

Across the entire suite of benchmarks, the GTX 280 proved to be some 5-10% faster than the RADEON HD 4890, at the limited resolution of 1920 x 1080 at least. When high level antialiasing was enabled (8x), the card slowed down a bit more than the AMD counterparts with the same 1 GB amount of memory, which we take to imply that at higher resolution, a similar performance drop might occur that would put the RADEONs back in the lead.
