Gigabyte X48 DQ6 775 Motherboard
May 10, 2008

Gigabyte being a leader in motherboards is making it easy on us to have the best when new chipsets are released. They have being right there, first to market, when Intel believed it was time for change. This used to be a position held by Asus. Gigabyte is the first to bring us the new X48 chipset to our rigs. This honor belongs to the X48-DQ6 and X48T-DQ6, DDR2 and DDR3 versions respectively. The DQ6 being the high end model for Gigabyte, it has all the bells and whistles. From complex cooling systems to high-end capacitors you can’t ask for more in a motherboard except for excellent overclocking. Can the X48-DQ6 accomplish what we achieved with EX-38 just a few weeks ago?

vantec NexStar 3i Power Management Enclosure
May 06, 2008

Vantec has added another member to the NexStar 360 lineup. The 3i boasts some things that we have not seen from Vantec in their many ages in the industry. In the past year or so we have seen motherboards feature energy efficiency, now we have it in hard drive enclosures. The 3i has an integrated controller that can regulate power to the drive resulting in less power consumption, less noise and longer drive life. Adding the real reason why we buy hard drive enclosures, which is for data storage, the new Vantec housing may be worth taking a look at.

Super Talent Launches MLC SATA-II SSDs for Notebooks

San Jose, California – May 6, 2008 – Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today launched a new line of MasterDrive solid state drives (SSDs) that are 100% interchangeable with hard disk drives (HDDs), but are faster, lighter, use less power and are far more rugged and reliable.

MasterDrive SSDs use NAND Flash rather than magnetic platters as the storage medium, giving them many advantages over HDDs. These drives have no moving parts, and therefore are completely silent, lighter weight and more reliable than HDDs. Moreover, they consume a fraction of the power of HDDs, meaning they produce less heat and offer longer battery life in mobile computing. MasterDrive SSDs use a SATA-II (3Gbps) interface to support high bandwidth and broad compatibility with motherboards, and have a standard 2.5-inch form factor. Proprietary wear-leveling algorithms extend the life of these SSDs.

Iron Man had no trouble with its targeted audience this past weekend.

"The phrase uttered by Iron Man executives this past weekend to each other was likely "crisis averted". Some executives responsible for the movie Iron Man -- which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow -- expressed concerns that Grand Theft Auto IV would seriously erode the movie's opening weekend.

It appears that the Iron Man executives had little to fear when the final box office tallies came in yesterday. The movie brought in $100.7M over the weekend -- the heady tally makes it the second highest gross for a non-sequel behind Spider-Man and the tenth highest grossing movie of all time. Iron Man' returns were boosted by it showing in an impressive 4,105 theaters."

Fourth time's the charm? Andersen refiles RIAA lawsuit

"Lory Lybeck, attorney for former RIAA defendant Tanya Andersen, has filed an amended complaint in her malicious prosecution lawsuit against the record labels and the RIAA. It's Lybeck's fourth attempt at crafting a complaint acceptable to the judge, and, if it is successful, it will set the stage for what Andersen hopes will be far-ranging discovery into the RIAA's tactics throughout its long-running legal campaign against P2P users.

Andersen's first three complaints have all been dismissed by the judge presiding over the case, but Judge Anna J. Brown has given Andersen leave to refile each time. The initial complaint, which accused the RIAA of racketeering, fraud, invasion of privacy, deceptive business practices, and a host of other misdeeds, was dismissed by Judge Brown in February. In her decision, she indicated that Andersen failed to adequately state claims for relief, but gave her leave to refile an amended complaint."
